Best annual family events in the Northern Territory
Most events in the Northern Territory, and in particular Darwin, are very child friendly. From the family-focused Territory Taste Festival and iconic Darwin Festival, to quirky 'dry boat' racing at the Henley-on-Todd Regatta and races of the Uluru Camel Cup – the Northern Territory are dedicated to including wonderful elements of family fun in all their spectacularly unique events.
4 December, Darwin
At this free event, a range of stalls sell Christmas gifts, food and crafts. The event features live music, art displays, waterslides, Santa photos and face painting for kids.
This exciting annual outback festival features camel races, fashions on the field, an outback BBQ and family-friendly environment.
3 June, Darwin
On Darwin’s Waterfront, this annual event proudly showcases the best of local Territory produce with two days of cooking demonstrations, master cooking classes and family-focused entertainment.
8 – 10 June, Barunga
This celebration of Indigenous community life and history is all about music, sport and culture. With its Didgeridoo competitions, storytelling, sporting competitions, musical performances and dedicated children’s activities – the festival is a much-loved Territory event.
1 July, Northern Territory
This free state-wide event celebrates everything about living in the Northern Territory, with fireworks, market stalls, family activities, music and entertainment across most communities, and major events in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.
22 July, Darwin
The renowned can and milk container recycling event features great kid’s competitions, races for all ages, build-a-boat challenge and Mindil Beach Sunset Markets.
August, Alice Springs
Opening with the annual family Mermaids’ Picnic, this upbeat festival showcases desert lifestyles, aimed toward bringing out the best that Alice Springs can be. With great family activities, workshops, performances and its positive atmosphere, the event is a fantastic experience for all ages.

The tropical city is transformed with free outdoor events, concerts, theatre, family activities and multicultural food stalls at the decorated Festival Park and venues across Darwin.
18 August, Alice Springs
Held on the sandy bed of the Todd River in Alice Springs, this fun ‘dry boat’ race event features under 12’s egg and spoon, rubber duckies and 3-legged races, as well as the exciting Build Your Own Boat event.
