Overview

When the British Museum was opened in 1759 it was the first national museum to be open to the public anywhere in the world. It was free to visit (and still is) so that any ‘studious and curious persons’ could pass through its doors and look upon the strange objects collected from all over the globe. Lots of kids will want to head straight to Rooms 62 and 63 of the Roxie Walker galleries to see the Egyptian mummies. Handling sessions take place daily in various galleries and there are some fantastic trail booklets available in the Paul Hamlyn Library that help kids of different ages get the best out of the museum.

Good to knows

  • 8–15 year olds can join Young Friends for a chance to explore the Museum at night
  • There are daily free activities for kids, including craft, activity trails and digital workshops
  • Visit the Families Desk in the Great Court to borrow activities and for advice on your visit.
  • The free Little Feet sessions for under 5s offer opportunities for creative play, making and exploring.
